The opening stages of Lori Vallow Daybell's trial in Maricopa County, Arizona, witnessed the beginning of what will be a protracted jury selection process. Vallow Daybell, labeled the "Doomsday Mom" due to her alleged end-times beliefs, stands accused in the 2019 murder conspiracy of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, she appeared in court to sift through prospective jurors, alongside her court-appointed legal advisors.

Deliberations yesterday saw around 51 of the initial 200 questionnaire respondents moving forward in the selection process. The court is aiming to secure a 12-member jury and four alternates by week's end, even as Lori, who's already serving a life sentence in Idaho for other convictions, asserts her right to self-representation. Meanwhile, complications arose in a 90-minute motion hearing, where challenges against the defense's lack of subpoenaed witnesses were put forward by prosecutors and countered by Vallow Daybell, who argued her team needed more time, "They’ve interviewed every single person on there. They have written transcripted interviews, and video interviews of all these people," she said, as per FOX 10 Phoenix's reporting.

On the flip side, Vallow Daybell's cousin Meegan Conner displayed mixed emotions. Observing the trial proceedings, Conner noted to ABC 15, "The Lori that I see in the courtroom is the Lori that I know; Fiery, insistent, sometimes belligerent," describing a demeanor not unfamiliar to the courts. Conner further remarked on the apparent attitude of the accused, stating, "This is a game for her," painting a picture of someone absorbed in their last high-stakes, albeit dire, performance.

Adding to the courtroom dynamic, the case of Nate Eaton, a journalist with longstanding coverage of the Daybell saga, attracted attention. While initially placed on Vallow Daybell's witness list, Eaton's name was struck after a judge heard from his attorney and the self-represented defendant, with new proceedings set to continue the juror vetting. In a separate charge, Vallow Daybell is also accused of conspiring to murder her ex-niece-in-law, Brandon Boudreaux, which will be tried separately, as reported by ABC 15.
