Tragedy struck the community of La Grange last week when a devastating multi-vehicle accident claimed the lives of a local couple and injured three others. According to WGN-TV, police are investigating the series of events that led a white SUV to be involved in two separate crashes before the fatal collision at the intersection of 47th Street and Willow Springs Road. The victims, identified as Brett and Melissa Lane of Hinsdale, were killed on impact.
A turnover of harrowing events on Friday saw the white SUV speeding northbound along Willow Springs Road, the driver seemingly unable to control the vehicle before it met a tragic fate at an intersection, a scenario confirmed by La Grange police and as initially covered by CBS News.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are probing whether a medical emergency might have been a contributing factor to the driver's erratic behavior behind the wheel. The yet to be identified driver of the SUV was not being pursued by police during the incidents.
"They were regulars here," Father Burke Masters of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church said recalling their devotion, expressing his grief and the collective heartache of the congregation "and so it affects me personally, because I know them, and I'm grieving as an individual, but then also have to be present to the community and help us walk this journey together," Father Masters told CBS News. Funeral services for Brett and Melissa Lane are to be held Wednesday, with the community and the Lane family's strong faith providing solace during these trying times.
The Lanes leave behind a family of five, mostly adult children.
