Tragedy struck the 300 block of North First Street in El Cajon yesterday when a man was fatally shot. The El Cajon Police Department reports that at approximately 10:13 AM, calls came in about shots fired in the area. Law enforcement officers arrived on the scene to find a man with gunshot wounds, who was shortly after transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the victim has not been revealed, pending family notification.
The El Cajon police have indicated the nature of the attack seems isolated, and that the individuals involved, the victim and the suspect, were not strangers to one another. No information regarding the suspect has been disclosed as of now, as the investigating authorities work to construct a clearer picture of the events that led to the shooting. Schools in the vicinity, including El Cajon Valley High School, were put into lockdown or secure campus mode as a safety measure despite the incident’s apparent lack of connection to the educational institutions.
The preemptive security protocols were lifted once it was confirmed that there was no direct threat to the students or staff. The El Cajon Police Department has extended an invitation to the public for any information pertinent to the case, urging those who know something to come forward, either by contacting them directly at (619) 579-3311 or through the anonymous tip line at sdcrimestoppers.org.
