The Georgia Symphony Orchestra (GSO) and The Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre are doubling down on their commitment to inclusivity by extending sensory-friendly programming through 2025 in Marietta, catering to families and individuals with sensory sensitivities. These initiatives follow the GSO's recent certification by KultureCity, a non-profit that pushes for accessible experiences for those with sensory needs—training staff and volunteers to support visitors with sensory challenges effectively, as reported by the City of Marietta's official website.
Coming up on the calendar for the GSO is "Peter and the Wolf," slated for April 19, which will feature modifications like toned-down lighting, moderated sound levels, and an anything-goes attitude toward audience movement within the concert space. Suzanne Tucker, Executive Director of the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, emphasized the significance of these accommodations, saying on the City's website, "Our sensory-friendly concerts, like Peter and the Wolf, provide a unique opportunity for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families to experience the joy of live music in a comfortable, welcoming environment." The GSO's website is the go-to place for those interested in snagging tickets for this event.
The Strand Theatre, taking cues from the GSO's lead last year, is rolling out more sensory-friendly screenings featuring a Pixar film series, the lights turned halfway up, the sound dialed back substantially, and a quieter lobby for any needed time away from the screen, passers-by can join Woody and Buzz on screen for "Toy Story" on April 24, or dive in with "Finding Dory" on May 28, among others set to screen this season. Everyone looking to catch these family favorites in a supportive environment can head to The Strand Theatre’s website for tickets.
Andy Gaines, Executive Director of The Strand, recounts last year's triumph with Disney films, expressing the continuation of sensory-friendly screenings, saying on the City's website, "After the success of last year’s sensory-friendly Disney screenings, we saw the need and wanted to continue this series in 2025 with family-favorite Pixar films." Their lineup also includes hits like "Cars" and "The Incredibles," providing options for movie-goers seeking a laid-back cinema experience throughout the summer.
Both GSO and The Strand are staking their spots as cultural pioneers in Marietta by plying their offerings with accessibility in mind, working to make sure the joys of music and film are not hindered by sensory barriers, reinforcing the notion that the arts should be a shared and enriching experience for all members of the community.
