Last week's pursuit of a stolen U-Haul truck unfolded like a scene straight out of an action movie, but for MCSO K-9 Hans, it was just another day on the job. According to a social media post by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, the deputy located the occupied stolen truck in the Wood Village Fred Meyer parking lot, only to have the suspect bolt, leading to a dramatic chase.
The suspect refused to surrender quietly after deputies deployed a spike strip at NE 223rd Avenue and NE Park Lane, which punctured the vehicle's tires. Continuing to evade authorities, the suspect then led the deputy through Gresham into Northeast Portland, where, despite sustaining flat tires, he refused to give up. The Portland Police Bureau joined the chase, providing additional support before a successful second spike strip deployment by the officers helped to bring the truck to a halt.
When the suspect made a run for it, exiting the truck near NE Sandy Boulevard and NE 131st Place, K-9 Hans was called in. Known for exceptional tracking skills, Hans didn't disappoint, quickly sniffing out the suspect hidden under a nearby deck, leading to the arrest of 38-year-old Gabriel Vogel at 6:49 p.m. With no property damage or injuries reported aside from the truck's tires, the successful capture was a testament to multi-agency cooperation.
The aftermath of the chase saw the wayward truck being returned to U-Haul with minimum fuss and little cargo found inside it. Following the high-energy chase, K-9 Hans was lavished with some well-deserved "verbal affirmations, pets, and his favorite toy" for his efforts, showing that even four-legged officers need a little appreciation for their hard work. The Sheriff's Office extended its gratitude to the assisting agencies for ensuring a swift and safe resolution to the incident.
