The Medford Fire Department recently gathered to honor the bravery and commitment of its first responders at the 2025 Annual Awards Banquet. As reported by their official website, the event took place in April and shone a spotlight on the department's achievements over the past year, while also showcasing their dedication to community protection and emergency response.
Highlights from the awards ceremony included several service pins, acknowledging the tireless work of team members like Deputy Chief Chris Howard, who has now been a part of the force for 30 years, and others with 25 years to their names. A series of education service bars were also awarded to seven members who completed Fire Officer-level training, marking an uncompromising commitment to professional growth within the department. Acknowledging these milestones, Chief Thompson remarked, “Our people are the fabric of our success,” as detailed on the department's news release.
Among those recognized for their exemplary service were Battalion Chief Kip Gray, who received the Chief’s Coin for his implementation of ICS systems, and Firefighter James Oppelt, who was honored with the Firefighter of the Year award for his remarkable resilience after a life-altering injury. Engineers Nathan Wickham and Kyle Miller were commended with a Letter of Commendation for their rapid and skilled response, ensuring an uninterrupted water supply at a residential fire scene.
Further outstanding service awards were conferred upon Deputy Fire Marshal Steve Parks for his work in bolstering operational readiness and community collaboration. Various teams, such as the EMS Squads 13 & 14, were also recognized for their significant contributions in enhancing the department's operational efficiency. As the banquet celebrated various individual and team achievements, it served as a reminder of the consistent efforts put forth by the men and women of Medford Fire to protect their community every day.
