Miami-Dade County has unveiled "Sips and Stories," a pop-up café operated by students from Learning Links School. The grand opening was held at the Kendale Lakes Branch Library today at 10 a.m., marking another step toward inclusivity and real-world skill development for young adults on the autism spectrum.

The initiative, which celebrates the culmination of Autism Acceptance Month, was championed by District 11 Commissioner Roberto J. Gonzalez, the Miami-Dade Public Library System, and Learning Links School, a specialized institution that caters to students with developmental disorders and learning disabilities. "I'm incredibly proud of our Miami-Dade Public Library System, along with Commissioner Gonzalez and Learning Links School, for bringing this innovative project to life," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava in a statement obtained by Miami-Dade County news release, “By empowering students with real-world skills and meaningful public engagement, we are not only closing out Autism Acceptance Month but also opening new doors for lifelong success.”

The café, located at 15205 SW 88 Street, Miami, FL 33196, will offer a range of coffees and snacks, managed by the students as part of their vocational curriculum. Prior to this endeavor, the same group ran a similar stand within their school grounds under the watchful eye of their educators - a project that has proven successful enough to merit an expansion into the broader community space of a public library.

“This important collaboration will significantly benefit Learning Links students and provide a welcome amenity for our residents to enjoy coffee and snacks at the Kendale Lakes Branch Library,” Commissioner Gonzalez stated. The "Sips and Stories" menu features a variety of hot and iced coffees, along with pastries available for purchase. Initial operating hours will be Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with plans to expand hours soon. Learning Links School Director Yarisa Valle-Echevarria shared her hopes for the program in an interview, saying, "This collaboration with Miami-Dade County will provide our students with real-world experience working in a public setting that we hope will lead to future employment opportunities," as noted by the news release.
