A Miami police officer, identified as Christian Vladimir Sanchez, was arrested following an alleged domestic violence incident in Sunrise, involving his wife, after attending an Easter event. According to NBC Miami, the 29-year-old officer is facing charges of domestic battery and robbery without a firearm.
Following the incident on Sunday, Sanchez, who was heavily intoxicated according to deputies, reportedly struck his wife more than 30 times. A judge set his bond at $50,000 during a court appearance yesterday. It has been reported by Local 10 News that the Broward Sheriff's Office responded to the scene after the victim, bearing a bloody lip and blood on her teeth, sought help from her neighbors.
The arrest report details how the dispute began when Sanchez's wife asked him to exit the shower where he was for what she considered too long a time, as she wanted to bathe their daughter. Nevertheless, she assured her husband she would leave the next morning when the situation escalated, and he demanded she leave the house and surrender her cellphone. This led to the alleged assault which included Sanchez demanding her phone and hitting her while on top of her on their bed, as per NBC Miami's findings.
Further exacerbating the violence, "His wife agreed to leave and told Sanchez that she would in the morning but he grabbed her ponytail and pulled it back, which caused her to accidentally hit their daughter in the head," NBC Miami reported. In response to the daughter crying, the officer was heard apologizing to the child, regretting that her "mother was a [expletive]."
Sanchez has been relieved of duty with pay, pending an Internal Affairs Division investigation, as indicated in a statement by the City of Miami Police. The victim, in the meantime, was granted a no-contact order against Sanchez, who is also restricted from possessing any firearms or ammunition, further detailed in reports from Local 10 News.
Evidence of the assault was corroborated by video recorded by a second victim in the home. After the video was reviewed by officials, the Miami officer was apprehended and charged. Since his arrest, Sanchez has been released from jail and is now monitored by a GPS device.
