Starting Monday, downtown Chicago commuters will need to adjust their routes as the State Street Bridge begins months of repairs, a mainstay connection for both drivers and pedestrians, is closed until approximately Thanksgiving.
In an effort to replace floor beams, fix the bridge's center locks, and address further damage from years of use and extreme weather, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has deemed the lengthy closure necessary, and as a result, detours will direct traffic through alternative streets, this move will pose an inconvenience for many, including the State Street Bridge commuter Lori who told NBC Chicago, "Six months? You can't do six months."
CDOT has laid out detours that include a mix of Wacker Dr, Kinzie St, Clark St, and Dearborn St for vehicular traffic, along with recommendations for pedestrians to use Dearborn Street or Wabash Avenue; bicyclists can continue using the protected bike lane on Dearborn Street, these alternate routes aim to lessen the temporary inconvenience the construction may bring.
Alongside these traffic adjustments, CDOT officials, including Commissioner Tom Carney, remind the public of the project's necessity, stating to NBC Chicago, "A recent inspection identified deterioration that prompted us to move this repair project forward." Furthermore, the changes will impact several CTA bus routes, with re-routing information available for affected lines such as the northbound and southbound #29 buses, southbound #36 buses, and southbound #62 buses.
Those seeking further information on detours and expected travel adjustments can reference materials provided by both CDOT and public transit agencies, with detailed detour maps and schedules posted online to accommodate the displacements during the critical rehabilitation of the State Street Bridge, as reported by Fox 32 Chicago. The aim is to minimize disruption while ensuring that the much-needed repairs are expedited for a safer and more reliable infrastructure.
