A fiery two-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 88 near Eola Road in Aurora killed two people early Wednesday, with one of the vehicles fully engulfed in flames by the time first responders arrived. The collision happened around 12:45 a.m., and no other injuries have been reported.
Illinois State Police responded to the crash near Eola Road and confirmed that two people died at the scene, though officials have not yet released their identities, according to CBS Chicago. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it's not yet clear what sparked the fire that consumed one of the vehicles.
Eastbound Lanes Shut Down For Hours
The crash forced authorities to close all eastbound lanes of I-88 between Route 59 and Eola Road for the rest of the overnight hours, according to the Daily Herald. Those lanes reopened shortly before 5:30 a.m., the paper reported. Naperville Patch notes that the stretch is a primary commuter route connecting Chicago's western suburbs.
The Eola Road interchange is also home to the tollway's Plaza 60 all-electronic tolling location, according to the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. The cashless system was designed to cut down on the kind of merging that can cause congestion and crashes at busy interchanges.
Part Of A Grim Stretch For Aurora-Area Drivers
Wednesday's fatality adds to a string of severe crashes that have rattled the Aurora area in recent months. On Tuesday, Cook County prosecutors charged a 29-year-old Aurora resident with murder after an alleged high-speed wrong-way drive on Chicago's Dan Ryan Expressway killed his 28-year-old passenger, according to Hoodline's earlier reporting; vehicle telemetry in that case showed the car reached 86 mph before impact.
Just last Friday, Kane County prosecutors announced the arrest and reckless homicide indictment of a 31-year-old Aurora resident tied to an October 2025 high-speed crash on I-88 in North Aurora that killed two people, the Daily Herald reported. That defendant was accused of driving 26 to 34 mph over the speed limit without headlights before fleeing the scene.
Less than three months before that, on May 10, a head-on wrong-way crash on I-88 near Aurora claimed three lives, including two 21-year-old college students and a 32-year-old driver, per FOX 32 Chicago. Hoodline previously covered that crash in Three Dead In I-88 Crash.
A Corridor Flagged For High-Speed Risk
The stretch of I-88 running through DuPage County has long been flagged as one of the region's more hazardous corridors, with high travel speeds and dense commercial truck traffic cited as contributing factors, according to a multi-year review of state crash data by the Cullotta Bravo Law Group. Statewide, Illinois recorded 1,178 traffic deaths across 1,085 fatal collisions in 2024, with alcohol contributing to 20.4% of all fatal crashes, per the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Investigation Could Take Weeks To Conclude
The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit typically investigates fatal collisions using 3D laser mapping and downloads from a vehicle's Event Data Recorder, according to Illinois State Police. State law also requires drivers or law enforcement agencies involved in fatal crashes to submit formal reports to the state police within 10 days, a requirement meant to help establish official crash records and determine insurance liability.
