An investigation is underway following the arrest of a 23-year-old man, accused of assaulting an 18-year-old woman during her morning run on a Murfreesboro hiking trail, according to local authorities. The incident, which left the community on high alert, occurred around 8:30 a.m. Monday on the trail behind Oaklands Park on Maney Avenue, WGNS Radio reports.
The Murfreesboro Police Department identified the suspect as Xavier Carter, 23, following an incident later that same day at the Murphy Express on Memorial Boulevard where Carter was arrested for theft. The 18-year-old victim had been on her run when the alleged attack occurred, WSMV informed its readers.
Carter faces charges that include kidnapping, sexual battery from the alleged attack, and theft from the gas station incident. The Murfreesboro Police Department, as mentioned in a WKRN report, has confirmed that Carter is being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $30,000 bond. A hearing is scheduled for June 3 in General Sessions Court.
Local law enforcement continues their call for any individuals with information related to the case, to come forward as the investigation unfolds, WGNS Radio mentioned.
