After a comprehensive two-year investigation into the devastating events at The Covenant School, where six people, including three children, were murdered, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) has officially closed the case. According to their report, the investigation drew to a close due to the death of Audrey Hale, the perpetrator, who was shot by MNPD officers responding to the scene.
The MNPD statement, accompanied by a detailed 48-page report, highlights key findings from the investigation, which concluded that Hale's motive centered around the pursuit of notoriety. She intentionally left behind material hoping for it to be dissected, analyzed, and for her life and attack to become the subject of public discourse and perhaps even inspire documentaries or films. She desired for her firearms to be displayed in a museum, and sought to show off "her superiority to others." Audrey Hale acted alone and bore no personal vendetta against her victims whom she considered "innocents" and akin to herself, and the unfortunate fact that this school was picked as a target due to its perceived vulnerability and its prior meaning in Hale's life, fulfilling her dark wish to die in a place that once brought her happiness.
The released report clarifies that, despite Audrey Hale's preparation and premeditation, there is no evidence to suggest anyone else was complicit or provided assistance in her plan. This conclusion comes with the acknowledgment that Hale was rational and sane at the time of the attack, cleverly withholding crucial information from her mental health care providers to avoid interruption of her plan. Her parents, noted for attempting to help her seek mental healthcare, and the firearms retailers, having conducted necessary background checks, do not face criminal charges in the case.
The MNPD has decided to keep the specifics of Hale's action plan confidential, citing concerns that the publishing of such information could serve as a dangerous guide for future mass shooters.
