For individuals with an appreciation for history, an important date approaches on the Oregon Historic Cemeteries Grant committee calendar: May 8. On this day, the committee will convene to evaluate and rank applications for a grant program dedicated to preserving Oregon's historic cemeteries' historical and cultural value. According to a statement from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, the committee's recommendations will be submitted to the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries for final approval on May 27.
Members of the public who wish to observe the proceedings may do so via a Zoom meeting scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM. Registration information is available in the meeting agenda. Translation services can be arranged by calling 503-986-0690 with at least 72 hours’ notice.
The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries is established through state legislation and comprises seven appointed members. The commission maintains an inventory of the state’s historic cemeteries and burial sites and is vital in promoting public awareness of their significance. In addition to its advisory functions, the commission also facilitates access to financial and technical assistance to preserve and maintain these sites.
