The incident occurred after school hours, around the time when afterschool programs were in session. According to NBC Miami, the sight of squad cars and a circling helicopter was a stark reminder as parents huddled around the perimeter, awaiting news.
The lockdown was initiated after, Broward Sheriff's Office received a 911 call concerning the individual. It was out of an abundance of caution that Westglades Middle School also found itself under the same restrictions. "Parents received an email that both schools were placed on lockdown after the 911 call was placed," reported NBC Miami. The congestion of cars outside the school became an accidental tableau of collective anxiety, as deputies assessed the security of the campus.
Michelle Kefford, the principal of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, wasted no time in communicating with parents. In a message sent around 4 p.m. – as recounted by TAPinto – alerted them about the unfolding situation. By this point, the majority of students had left the premises, yet a fair number remained on-site, engaged in various after-school activities.
However, the tension was short-lived. An hour following the initial report, the Broward Sheriff's Office announced that the concerns were without merit. "But after detectives investigated, it was deemed unfounded," explained TAPinto in their summation of the events.
