As the 100-day mark ticks by for Executive Ryan Mello's tenure in Pierce County, locals have begun to see the fruits of a dynamic agenda that's making notable strides in community-oriented initiatives. This tempo, set shortly after Mello transitioned from his role as Chair of the Pierce County Council to his current executive position, signals an active approach to governance that prioritizes connectedness and the well-being of inhabitants.
At the heart of Mello's campaign, the 'Forward Together' agenda promised to foster communities that were both safe and hospitable. It seems to be delivering—despite the "uncertainty of everything happening at the federal and state level," Mello's administration is determined to constantly move the needle on important local issues. As Mello stated, "Our Forward Together agenda is all about building communities that are safe, welcoming and connected." In a testament to these efforts, the county has been successfully erecting affordable housing at a pace previously unseen, a feat bolstered by the Maureen Howard Affordable Housing Act. According to a press release, nearly 750 units have already been created, with projects like the Hidden Firs and Aviva Crossing adding to this impressive count.
Moreover, the county's vibrancy is to be amplified on an international stage as it prepares to host one of nine FIFA World Cup 2026 fan zones in Washington state. This occasion, beyond doubt, is a significant economic and cultural boon, expected to draw visitors by the hundreds of thousands. Concurrently, Mello's team has extended its warmth quite literally, by establishing the Parkland Warming Center during a punitive January freeze, assisting hundreds of unhoused individuals.
Mello's commitment to upholding a "welcoming county" was further underscored by a directive limiting Pierce County's involvement in federal immigration enforcement. In sync with these values, a noteworthy initiative, the 100-Day Challenge to End Youth Homelessness, was launched to integrate strategies aiming to abolish youth and young adult homelessness, highlighting the county as a pilot community, as mentioned in the county's statement.
As the momentum from the first 100 days shows no sign of waning, further initiatives are in pipeline. A comprehensive plan to amplify the county's housing, employment, and sustainability is in the works, along with the deployment of opioid settlement funds to expand detox and treatment services. Also, the upcoming Vision Zero plan promises to safely revamp accessibility on county streets, aiming to prevent all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while promoting safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all. Collectively, these ongoing and future projects encapsulate a proactive governance approach that reflects not only the promises made by the Executive Mello but an earnest endeavor to see them through in the fabric of Pierce County.
