Following a reported shooting tied to illegal street racing in Salt Lake City, the city's police department has made two arrests, showcasing the efficacy of their Gang Unit. The SLCPD detailed the arrest of 20-year-old Styve Baitia and 18-year-old Yanik Baitia, both suspected of involvement in gang activity and recent violent incidents.
Emerging from a call at 12:56 a.m. on April 12, 2025, about a possible shooting at a gas station, the investigation had scant initial leads. Nevertheless, within a day, the Gang Unit tracked down a vehicle affiliated with the shooting. After a pursuit, supported by the Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau, Styve Baitia was arrested on unrelated felony charges and subsequently released on bond on April 18.
The case further developed when an off-duty detective recognized a car from the incident and stopped it, uncovering a firearm and evidence of gunshot damage. This led to the discovery of one of the car’s occupants as the victim from the initial shooting. Gang detectives soon arrested the Baitia brothers on April 23, seizing ammunition, firearm accessories, and drugs during warrant execution.
Allegedly involved in a gang linked to multiple shootings in the region, the Baitia brothers face charges for felony discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault. In their report, the SLCPD stated, "It is alleged the Baitia brothers are key members of an active and violent gang." The arrests highlight the SLCPD's investigative-based suppression model, which prioritizes proactive enforcement and intelligence gathering.
These efforts are part of a broader initiative by the department's Gang Unit to disrupt gang activity and reduce gun violence through enforcement, education, and outreach. The SLCPD also extended appreciation to the Utah Department of Public Safety and its Aero Bureau for their role in the arrests. While the suspects are charged, it is important to note that these allegations are not convictions. Every arrested individual is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
