The streets of San Diego were disrupted this morning by an officer-involved shooting in the 300 block of 31st Street. The incident, which resulted in the death of a Hispanic male, began when a citizen approached a patrolling San Diego Police Sergeant at around 10:10 a.m., reporting a man inside a blue Ford Fusion wielding a black revolver. This account, coming from the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, states that responding officers found the vehicle and conducted a high-risk stop, safely removing a female companion from the scene. At the same time, the male subject remained defiant inside.
Despite negotiations lasting close to 40 minutes, the situation escalated when the male reportedly brandished what appeared to be a black revolver. Five officers, along with one sergeant, believing they were threatened, opened fire. After removing the man from the car to administer life-saving measures, he was transported to the hospital. Regrettably, he later died from his injuries. While examining the scene, detectives discovered that the item in question was a B.B. gun styled to resemble a revolver. No officers sustained injuries during the encounter.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the San Diego County Sheriff's Homicide Unit is now meticulously investigating the shooting. What drove the man to act in a manner that led to this tragic outcome remains unclear at this time.
