The South Florida community is mourning the loss of a dedicated officer following a tragic accident in Georgia. Lt. Helio Garcia, a member of the South Fulton Police Department, was killed while on duty in a vehicle collision. The incident was first reported by Local 10 News, which confirmed the officer's death on Wednesday after being involved in a head-on crash.
Lt. Garcia had been hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital after the crash occurred on Tuesday night. He joined the South Fulton Police Department in 2018, becoming a recognized figure within the force. In a statement obtained by Local 10 News, Chief Keith Meadows of the South Fulton Police expressed profound sorrow: "In the 39 years I have been doing this job, I have lost a lot of friends in the line of duty, and certainly none hits harder than this one to me, simply because Helio meant a great deal to me as a leader in this organization."
A profound sense of loss has also been echoed by the wider law enforcement community. A post shared on the Sheriff Deputies Facebook page said, "It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lt. Helio Garcia." The tribute went on to describe Lt. Garcia as a symbol of "courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to protecting and serving his community," and ended with a prayer emoji sequence and a blue heart, suggestive of unity within the law enforcement family.
Lt. Garcia is survived by his wife, Eliana Garcia, his children, Angelina Rosa Pittman, Nicolas Anthony Garcia, and Isabella Echeverri, as well as his parents and brothers. According to the Local 10 News report, the funeral service is set for Monday at 1 p.m. at World Changers Church International in College Park, and he will be laid to rest next to his late son Giovanni Armando Garcia at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn South & Woodlawn Park Cemetery South in Miami-Dade County.
