Early this morning, an urgent situation unfolded as Stoneham Police were called upon to address a resident armed with a cutting instrument and undergoing a serious mental health episode. According to Stoneham Police Department News, the local authorities arrived on Morgan Avenue at about 11 a.m. after being notified of the situation. The officers immediately cordoned off the area, and, due to the potential danger, the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT Team, consisting of negotiators with special training, was called in for assistance.
The attempt at engaging the individual in crisis through negotiation didn't take hold; this was followed by SWAT team members storming the residence. The Stoneham Police Department News reported, "After de-escalation efforts by negotiators were not successful, SWAT Team members entered the home where the individual was safely secured." During the incident, the authorities stated that there were no injuries reported.
Subsequently, the individual was transported to an area hospital for further evaluation and treatment. The combined efforts of Armstrong Ambulance and the Stoneham Fire Department were also recognized, as they provided essential aid at the unsettling scene.
Ensuring public safety is a top priority for law enforcement, which was echoed in the statement that no additional information would be available and assured that there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
