Following an onslaught of severe weather resulting in a possible tornado and devastating winds of 80-100 mph, approximately 75,000 residents in northwest Indiana serviced by AES Indiana found themselves without power. AES Indiana crews have been relentlessly working to mitigate the impact, laboring through the night to reinstate electrical service to over 50,000 customers within 12 hours. "More than half of our customers (were) restored as of 8:30 this morning. Crews will work around the clock to restore the remaining 25,000 customers as quickly, and safely as possible," Mallory Duncan, AES Indiana spokesperson, said Thursday morning, as per WISH-TV.
As these efforts press forward, Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam has confirmed a Local Disaster Emergency Declaration to expedite the recovery process. "This declaration allows us to streamline processes, cut red tape, and prioritize what truly matters—helping our community rebuild," Mayor Finkam pointed out, expressing gratitude toward the city council for the swift appropriation of funds for rebuilding in the aftermath. The declaration that bridges communities in the face of disaster, will stand until Thursday, April 10, as reported by WRTV.
The high-velocity tempest did not only affect AES Indiana's jurisdiction; Duke Energy, another pivotal service provider in central Indiana, experienced nearly 97,000 storm-related outages. A robust response saw this number dramatically drop, with power restored to 98% of those affected. "We've made a lot of progress, but we have to finish strong and do it safely. Restoring the last customer to service, is as important as the first," Duke Energy's Clint Carnahan, general manager of emergency preparedness, announced. The remaining outages, affecting about 1,000 customers, are largely concentrated in Clark and Floyd counties, with the team striving to reconnect every last household, as per FOX59.
Both energy companies are tackling extensive damage to the infrastructure. AES Indiana is confronting around 1,100 incidents of damaged poles and toppled trees with an unwavering commitment to individual assessments and repairs. Duke Energy is also emphasizing the importance of safety in their final push to restore service, as the aftermath of such severe weather requires meticulous attention to protect both the repair crews and the communities they serve. Patience has been sought from the customers awaiting the return of their power, acknowledging the scale of the challenge at hand. In these trying times, each company's dedication not only to the swift restoration of services but to the safety of their operations, serves as a reminiscent thread that ties them to the fabric of Indiana's resilience in the face of natural adversities, WISH-TV reports.
