A serious collision on Interstate 15 in Millard County, Utah, has left three people hospitalized and caused a lengthy shutdown of the southbound lanes, as reported by ABC4. The accident, which took place near mile marker 177, involved a Tesla reported to be driving recklessly in the northbound lanes before it sideswiped a semi-truck and subsequently collided head-on with an SUV. The driver of the Tesla and two occupants of the SUV were taken to the hospital with varying conditions, according to ABC4.
The extent of the crash's impact was detailed by Gephardt Daily, stating that the Tesla had at one point come to a stop, only to then continue in the wrong direction and side-swipe a semi and then strike the SUV, leading to the roadway's closure which was expected to last for several hours and forcing southbound traffic to divert off at an earlier exit, congesting the surrounding routes.
KUTV reported that the SUV, after the head-on collision, went off the side of the road and rolled over; though no injuries were reported in the first semi involved in the sideswipe, an additional semi struck debris from the crash, sustaining minor damage. Traffic was rerouted onto a frontage road, with a prediction that the southbound lane would not open until after 11 p.m. on Wednesday.
As of yet, there has been no confirmation on whether the Tesla was in self-driving mode at the time of the incident or if impairment was a factor, it was the Utah Highway Patrol that provided insight into the chaotic scene, their wrecks' details grim reminders of the dangers that can unexpectedly erupt, transforming ordinary commutes into scenes of havoc. Lt. Cameron Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol mentioned that the Tesla was initially called in for reckless driving before it tragically breached the divide into oncoming traffic, emphasizing the serious nature of the crash. Traffic delays and diversions were anticipated to continue as authorities worked through the investigation and cleanup efforts.
