A sobering instance is the story of Katrina Bond, a college student whose life was cut short when a distracted driver collided with her vehicle as she slowed for traffic in a work zone on I-35 near Fort Worth, as detailed in a recent TxDOT announcement.
It's a stark reminder that a simple act like reading a text while driving can carry devastating consequences, not just for drivers but for everyone sharing the road. At a time when work zone crashes are on the rise, a focus on safety is more important than ever. "People think this kind of tragedy won’t happen to them. I didn’t think it would happen to me," Kathy Bond, Katrina's mother, told TxDOT while recounting her family's tragic loss.
National Work Zone Awareness Week, running April 21–25, serves as a backdrop for TxDOT's Be Safe. Drive Smart. campaign, which addresses the alarming 12% increase in work zone fatalities from the previous year. In 2024, nearly 28,000 crashes were reported in these zones, resulting in 215 deaths. Marking this as a dire issue, TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams stressed the importance of attentiveness for the safety of road crews and fellow motorists, stating, "Work zones can mean changing and unexpected conditions as crews work on the roadway. That’s why it’s vital that all Texans plan, avoid distractions and never rush through a work zone," as per the agency's campaign.
To combat these worrying trends, TxDOT dispenses practical advice: slow down, stay alert, heed road crew instructions, maintain a safe following distance, and allow extra commute time. These sensible tips come with a reminder that fines double in work zones when workers are on site, which should serve as an additional deterrent to hasty and distracted driving. Motorists are also reminded of the state's Move Over or Slow Down law, essentially mandating a lane change or speed reduction when approaching emergency response vehicles with flashing lights.
The Be Safe. Drive Smart. Initiative is part of TxDOT's broader "Drive like a Texan: Kind. Courteous. Safe." ethos, a call-to-action encouraging responsible driving behaviors.
