Residents in the city can expect to see fire department crews hard at work as the annual hydrant testing and water flow checks have kicked off this spring. According to an announcement from the City of Union City's official website, these routine maintenance checks are underway now and will continue through June 9, 2025.
Those of you planning your day should be aware that testing will take place on weekdays, wrapping up before the clock strikes 6:00 PM daily. The fire department ensures all hydrants are in good condition for emergencies, though maintenance may not occur on weekends.
The city has also issued an advisory after residents noticed their tap water looking murky instead of clear, as they’re used to. "Hydrant flushing may cause temporary water discoloration (brown or cloudy water) due to stirred sediment in the water mains," the city's statement reads. This phenomenon, while startling, is said to be normal and is expected to clear up shortly after the testing.
The City of Union City asks residents for patience during this process. While the water may temporarily look discolored, the fire department assures it's harmless. For more information, residents can visit the city's website.
