A Utah charter school director is now facing charges after allegedly possessing and distributing a large volume of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Jared Dallan Buckley, 40, of West Point, Utah, was appointed as the Lead Director of Leadership Learning Academy's campuses in Layton and Ogden, which cater to children from kindergarten through sixth grade. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Buckley is awaiting his initial court appearance.
Federal agents began to track "EMMA," a pseudonym later linked to Buckley, through an application commonly associated with CSAM activities. During the investigation, "EMMA" not only distributed a video containing child abuse but also claimed to be able to specially produce and distribute more material for profit. It was through a detailed investigation that Buckley's phone number was eventually connected to "EMMA." FBI agents executed a search warrant on April 22, which led to the uncovering of more than 10,000 illicit images and videos on Buckley's cellphone.
The Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah, Felice John Viti, publicly announced the charges, emphasizing the commitment of law enforcement agencies in addressing the exploitation of children. The FBI's Salt Lake City Field Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah are jointly progressing the case, which aligns with the goals of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative focused on combating the scourge of child exploitation and abuse.
Following the forensic examination of Buckley's cell phone, agents discovered extensive evidence of this material being spread across multiple online platforms. The DOJ press release emphasized the gravity of the issue and the national effort to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. Buckley's initial hearing took place in Salt Lake City at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse.
