In a significant development for labor unions in Utah, a referendum to challenge a ban on collective bargaining for public unions is one step closer to being placed before voters. The initiative has now collected enough valid signatures to potentially see the repeal of HB267, which restricts police, firefighter, and teacher unions from representing their members during contract negotiations. According to ABC4, over 146,000 signatures were verified, pushing past the required 140,748 signature mark needed for a statewide referendum.

The Protect Utah Workers coalition, a conglomerate of 19 labor groups, has been the driving force behind this push, managing to not only collect the signatures but also meet the threshold in 15 of the 29 state Senate districts, as reported by The Salt Lake Tribune. However, the effort isn't yet solidified, as there remains the chance for opponents to convince signees to potentially rescind their support. Regardless, if current trends continue, Utah voters will have the chance to decide in the 2026 election whether to upend the controversial HB267.

Validating the signatures has been a lengthy process, with each one being manually checked to ensure authenticity. Echoing the dedication of the effort, as obtained by ABC4 from the Protect Utah Coalition, reads, "Today, Utahns made history." The statement continued by highlighting the coalition's ability to breeze past "one of the most difficult referendum processes in the country." These sentiments were also shared by The Salt Lake Tribune, which noted that the over 320,000 signatures submitted marked the most gathered for any single initiative or referendum effort in Utah.

Meanwhile, the next phase in the validation process has been underway, with the Lt. Governor's Office officially confirming the sufficient quantity of signatures. As reported by FOX 13, the Utah Education Association's tracking supports the success of the effort in attaining the necessary approval across the multiple Senate districts. The verified 146,480 signatures only encapsulate part of the total submissions, with the validation to continue and 45 days provided for those wishing to remove their support via affidavits. The coalition faces a deadline of June 23 to have the lieutenant governor certify the outcome, while potential signature withdrawals must be filed by June 21.
