As the season's regular competitions draw to a close, the Utah track & field team is gearing up for a simultaneous weekend showcase. Athletes will be strutting their stuff at the Robison Invitational in Provo and the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, according to UtahUtes.com. The Robison Invitational is slated for April 30 to May 1 at Drake Track & Field, while the Desert Heat Classic is a one-day affair on May 3.
Splitting their muscle and might, standout competitors like Bailey Kealamakia are doubling up for both events, throwing their spikes onto both tracks; it's a hustle to notch last-minute qualifying times for the NCAA West Regional, and perhaps, not so incidentally, an endurance test in its own right. The Utes have this weekend and the upcoming Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Rock Chalk Park, hosted by Kansas, May 15-17, to hit their marks.
Utah's own Emily Martin grabbed headlines with her blistering 200m dash at 23.20 seconds, setting a new school record and stirring buzz about her potential at the upcoming regional showdowns. "After training with Team Canada for a week down in Baton Rouge, La., last week, junior Emily Martin raced out to a heat victory in the 200m dash behind a school-record breaking run of 23.20 and finished third-overall," UtahUtes.com reported.
