It was a classic ninth-inning nail-biter at Smith's Ballpark this past Sunday, but despite an offensive onslaught from the University of Utah baseball team, the Utes came up short in a 12-11 loss to No. 23 Kansas. The Utes hammered out 17 hits during the showdown, according to the team's official sports page, including dingers from Tyler Quinn, who popped a home run, and Derek Smith, who banged out his first collegiate triple.
While Utah's bats were hot, with Cameron Gurney going 3-for-3, the Kansas Jayhawks managed an eighth-inning rally, scoring eight runs in the final three innings to stage their comeback. In addition to Gurney's perfect day at the plate, Austen Roellig also nailed a perfect 3-for-3, racking up a few RBIs before leaving the game. The No. 3 spot in the Utah batting order, shared by Roellig and Quinn, was particularly lethal, going 4-for-5, with three RBIs and a brace of runs scored.
The early innings saw both teams trading the lead, with Utah pulling ahead 10-7 by the seventh inning. The team's relentless attack saw strong performances across the lineup, including multi-hit games from Santino Panaro, Kaden Carpenter, and Jake Long, alongside Smith's major league-worthy triple. However, the Jayhawks leveraged a Utah error and a grand slam to eke out a pivotal five-run eighth inning, swinging the lead to 12-10 in favor of the visitors.
Despite the late-game heroics, including Gurney's third hit of the day, which tallied another Utah run, the Utes fell just short as Lucas Boesen and the rest of the bullpen couldn't fend off the Jayhawk offense. With the tying run on base in the last stretch, the Utes had the fans on the edge of their seats, but Kansas held on to secure the victory. Cameron Nielson (2-4) ended up with the loss, after a bullpen effort that saw six pitchers take to the mound, "Idle on the midweek scene due to final exams," the University of Utah news release stated.
Looking ahead, the Utes have a break for final exams before returning to the fray on May 2nd, kicking off a three-game Big 12 series at Houston. Fans still eager for more Utes baseball can grab their tickets for the remainder of Utah's 2025 home schedule for $30 season passes or $10 single-game adult tickets, with youth tickets available for just $5 each.
