Atlantans eager to ride the wave of autonomous vehicle technology can now mark their calendars for this summer when Waymo's driverless ride service, in partnership with Uber, will become a reality in the city. Announced earlier this week, the service aims to cover a 65-square-mile expanse that includes Downtown, Buckhead, and Capitol View. Those interested can join the growing interest list through their Uber app by navigating to Account > Settings > Ride preferences > Autonomous vehicles, as FOX 5 Atlanta reported.

Prospective passengers keen on getting updates, or even an early shot at this futuristic travel option can sign on for notifications through the Uber app. Uber and Waymo disclosed that some of those who join the list will be selected for early ride access before the public launch — if you're among the chosen, you'll be notified in-app or by email. The service's rates are pegged to match Uber's familiar tiers such as UberX, and Uber Comfort, and for added ease of mind, riders can reach human support 24/7 courtesy of in-vehicle assistance, according to 11Alive.

The autonomous service, already a hit in Austin, Texas, is received well by users; Uber reports a majority showing preference for these driverless rides and doling out 5-star ratings frequently. Atlanta could well be poised to follow Austin's tread, witnessing a seamless blend of technology and tradition in urban commute. "With Waymo's world-class technology and Uber's proven platform, we’re excited to expand our partnership as we continue to build the future of transportation, which will combine the best of both autonomous and human drivers as we scale the industry’s first hybrid network," Uber stated, as detailed by 11Alive.

While some individuals are adjusting to the emergence of this technology, others are approaching the shift with caution. The introduction of driverless cars operating without a human driver represents a significant change in daily urban life. This development combines artificial intelligence with Uber’s transportation network. In the coming months, it will become clearer how Atlanta responds to and integrates this new form of mobility.
