In a sobering conclusion to a reckless driving incident that resulted in the loss of life, Maria Moncada has been sentenced to over six years of incarceration following a fatal DUII crash on NE Marine Drive. The collision, which occurred in February of the previous year, saw Moncada operating a vehicle under the influence, ultimately leading to the death of the other vehicle's occupant, Bonny Heyn.
Details provided by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office reveal that Moncada was driving a black BMW at upwards of 104 mph when she lost control and crashed into a car parked on the shoulder. At the scene, officers noted obvious signs of impairment; later, the Oregon State Crime Lab confirmed Moncada's blood alcohol concentration was significantly over the legal limit.
The case was concluded before Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Jenna Plank, who accepted a negotiated plea agreement from Moncada yesterday, leading to her sentencing the following day. Deputy District Attorney Kenzie Ludwig represented the state in a conscientious effort to hold the defendant accountable for her actions.
Judge Plank decided that Moncada's judgment includes 75 months in the Department of Corrections for Manslaughter in the Second Degree. Concurrently, she will serve 364 days in jail for Driving Under the Influence with a BAC over .15%.
