
Tragedy struck in Encinitas yesterday when a young pedestrian was fatally injured in a traffic collision. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive around 6:51 PM.
The situation unfolded when a westbound Nissan Xterra, operated by a 44-year-old man, impacted a southbound Ford Fusion, also driven by a 44-year-old man. Following the initial collision, the Nissan struck a 12-year-old girl who was crossing the street within the bounds of the crosswalk. The young girl did not survive her injuries, marking a solemn moment for the community.
Authorities reported that both drivers were present when the deputies arrived, and neither sustained injuries. Reflecting the gravity of the situation, the North Coastal Station Traffic Investigators and the Sheriff's Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating what caused this devastating incident.
Initial assessments by law enforcement suggest that neither alcohol nor drugs were contributing factors in the crash. However, investigators are continuing to piece together the details.
