A dramatic shift in weather conditions is on the horizon for the Bay Area and Central Coast. Forecasters warn residents to prepare for a rapid temperature swing and volatile atmospheric patterns over the coming days, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Francisco.
While today begins with a dense marine layer enveloping much of the region, potentially leading to drizzle and widespread cloud cover, conditions are expected to clear by afternoon. This may yield brief glimpses of sunshine and even a picturesque sunset for parts of the Bay Area. Despite this momentary calm, a notable shift is imminent.
For the immediate forecast, residents can expect relatively typical spring conditions. Coastal and inland valleys may awaken under a blanket of low clouds, a result of a 3,000-foot-deep marine layer that is gradually expanding. However, as the day progresses, this layer will retreat toward the coast, revealing clearer skies and seasonal temperatures tempered by familiar afternoon breezes.
An unsettled weather pattern is poised to develop heading into the weekend. Cooler temperatures, gusty winds, and increased cloud cover are anticipated, with light rainfall likely in the North Bay by Sunday.
The aviation community is also advised to prepare for variability. Although morning stratus clouds may temporarily disrupt visibility, the NWS predicts a general return to Visual Flight Rules (VFR) conditions once the cloud cover dissipates. However, locations such as Half Moon Bay may continue to experience reduced visibility due to persistent sea spray and cloud cover. Another round of widespread Marginal Visual Flight Rules (MVFR) conditions is expected to set in overnight.
Mariners should also take note of changing wind patterns. While moderate to fresh northwest winds are expected to ease through this morning, forecasts indicate a resurgence later in the week, with fresh to strong gusts returning to much of the coastal waters. Mariners are encouraged to remain alert and adjust travel plans and equipment accordingly.
