The emergency personnel were met with the grim task of retrieving the body from the bay's icy grasp. The presence of first responders was markedly felt as they operated a boat in the water and stood by along the waterfront. There has not yet been an official determination as to who the man is or how he came to find himself in the water, though the medical examiner has been tasked to examine the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event thoroughly.
Witnesses in the area first noticed something amiss and reported the sighting to authorities. The call prompted immediate action from local agencies. In the minutes following the discovery, the scene around Pier 15 became somber, with the SFPD and SFFD working together alongside the pier, cordoning off the area and beginning their investigation.
