Travelers heading northbound on Interstate 81 through Jefferson County should plan for additional travel time. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced that starting at 7 p.m. last night, I-81 North will be reduced to a single lane at the I-40 East intersection (MM 421). This closure, which aims to facilitate essential deck repairs on the bridge, will be in effect 24/7 until the work is completed.
TDOT has set the completion date for the project for the morning of May 5, making it a short-term disruption with potential long-term benefits. However, all scheduled construction is subject to change due to weather conditions. Commuters should anticipate possible delays and are advised to exercise caution in the area for both their safety and the safety of the crew on site.
During this period of reduced lanes and increased caution, motorists are advised to plan ahead. Resources such as live traffic updates can be useful before traveling on one of the area's busier routes. TDOT also reminds drivers to avoid distractions, including texting, calling, or using social media, especially when traffic patterns are altered and attention is required.
