A seven-year-old boy is recovering following an encounter with a pit bull at Thomas Boyland Park in Brooklyn. Angel Sanchez was spending the afternoon practicing baseball with his father when the attack took place. Angel shared with ABC7NY that he was blindsided by the animal which left him with injuries severe enough to require nine stitches. "I was bleeding and crying," he recalled of the traumatic incident that took place last month.
According to the ABC7NY report, Henry Sanchez, Angel's father, was positioned behind home plate when he was forced to act quickly to protect his son. In a desperate attempt to free his child from the dog's jaws, he bit the animal in the neck. Surveillance footage captured the owner of the dog initially attempting to intervene by punching the animal before ultimately leaving the scene without waiting for police—actions that have since prompted an investigation into the owner's whereabouts.
Henry Sanchez expressed to Brooklyn News 12 a desire for accountability from the dog's owner, emphasizing that no other parent should have to endure a similar experience. Meanwhile, Tony Nunez, a witness and family friend, described the dog as being "just relentless in his attack," reflecting the father's concerns about the dog's aggression and the severe toll it took on the young boy.
The incident has sparked renewed discussion about pet owner responsibility and public safety. "The dog's owner felt bad, but didn't stay around for the police," Henrry Sanchez told Brooklyn News 12. Police have yet to successfully locate either the dog or its owner since the April 14 incident.
