The Chicago Blackhawks have tapped Jeff Blashill as their new head coach, marking a new chapter for the floundering franchise. The 51-year-old brings a breadth of experience from his tenure with the Tampa Bay Lightning and a previous head coaching stint with the Detroit Red Wings.
As reported by CBS News Chicago, during his three seasons with the Lightning, Blashill was part of a coaching team that led the team to an impressive 138-86-22 record, earning playoff berths each year. However, shifting gears to the Windy City, Blashill is taking the reins of a Blackhawks squad that languished at the bottom of the standings this past season with a 25-46-11 record. The former college goaltender, whose player development skills are highly regarded, is set to inherit a team that is aiming to construct a turnaround anchored by young talent and upcoming draft picks.
General Manager Kyle Davidson expressed his confidence in Blashill, stating, "Jeff is an incredibly smart and talented coach who boasts more than 25 years of coaching experience across developmental leagues, the NHL and the world stage." Davidson's remarks, obtained by CBS News Chicago, underscored Blashill's alignment with the team's vision for the future.
Chicago's team, looking to rebuild, has been in the depths of the league stats, scoring an average of just 2.73 goals this season while allowing 3.56, which positions them at 31st for goals against, according to centralillinoisproud.com. Blashill will be tasked with ameliorating these stats and developing the burgeoning roster, including Connor Bedard, the team's burgeoning star.
Despite the team's recent struggles, Davidson has shown confidence in the organization's personnel, including Anders Sorensen, who served as interim coach after Luke Richardson's firing in December. "We love Anders," Davidson said. "He's a great hockey mind, he's a great person and those are the type of people we want in our organization," underlining the ongoing role Sorensen will play within the franchise, as noted by centralillinoisproud.com.
