Residents of Hyde Park and East Hyde Park are on high alert following a series of burglaries reported by the Chicago Police Department in the 002nd (Wentworth) District. According to a community announcement issued by the department, numerous instances of unlawful entry have been recorded, with offenders gaining access to apartments through doors or windows and removing property from the premises.
With burglaries spanning from the 5300 block of South Cornell Avenue to the 5600 block of South Blackstone Avenue, the thefts are concentrated in a relatively small area and have taken place under the cover of both daylight and darkness. Most recently, break-ins were reported on April 1, April 23, April 26, April 28, and April 30. The reports, occurring from early morning until late in the evening, firmly indicate that the perpetrators hold little regard for the time of day when selecting their targets.
The Chicago Police Department is actively encouraging residents to take preventive measures to safeguard their homes. "Keep the perimeter of your property well lit," the community alert advised. Moreover, emphasizing the importance of vigilance, residents are instructed to report suspicious activity immediately and ensure that all points of entry, including doors and windows, are securely locked. In the event of any damage to these entry points, prompt repair is strongly suggested.
The authorities also stress the significance of handling evidence properly post-incident. "If you are a victim do not touch anything, call police immediately," the alert stated, ensuring that residents preserve the integrity of the crime scene for police investigation. For those with video surveillance, a copy of the footage should be saved and given to the detectives on the case. Any witnesses are also asked to provide their contact information, which could be instrumental in the resolution of these cases.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation into these burglaries continues.
