Attention Woodlawn residents: The Chicago Police Department has issued a warning about a series of armed robberies in the 3rd (Grand Crossing) District. An individual has reportedly been confronting residents, displaying a handgun, and demanding their belongings, as reported by the Chicago Police Department. These incidents have raised serious concerns within the community.
The assailant struck twice on May 13, first at 6:40 p.m. and again at 8:52 p.m., on the 6400 block of S. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., each time confronting unsuspecting victims, the Chicago Police Department detailed accounts of the events show the perpetrator utilized a handgun to intimidate the victims and not only robbed them of their wallets and money but a sense of security in their neighborhood, as he fled the scene on foot after carrying out his crimes.
The suspect has been described as an Unknown Black male, as per the CPD. In the interim, the police have offered safety recommendations to the public, encouraging heightened awareness of surroundings and immediate reporting of any suspicious activity or encounters.
Among several safety guidelines, the police have specifically advised, "If you are confronted by an assailant, remain calm," and to "Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc.)," as stated by the CPD. Additionally, police urge witnesses or bystanders not to pursue the assailant. Instead, they should gather contact information if approached by other witnesses and call 9-1-1 immediately. Remaining at the scene—if it is safe to do so—can help facilitate the investigation.
