Yesterday, the U.S. Coast Guard initiated an operation that resulted in the interception of a small vessel carrying 15 individuals identified as aliens off the coast of San Diego. According to an official Coast Guard press release, the interception occurred approximately ten miles northwest of Point Loma.
The Coast Guard Cutters Petrel and Robert Ward were the ones to encounter the 20-foot cuddy cabin style vessel at around 4:20 AM. On board were 11 adult males and four adult females, all claiming Mexican nationality.
All 15 individuals, referred to in official terms as aliens, were detained by the Coast Guard. Following the apprehension, they were transferred into the custody of U.S. Border Patrol agents. The handover signifies a usual process in which such maritime interdictions are followed up by land-based authorities who take over the case once individuals are brought ashore.
