A Coconut Creek mother is currently dealing with the fallout of felony child abuse charges after law enforcement officials alleged that she disciplined her daughter using belts and a cord. Vonteria Georkisha Bradley, a 33-year-old woman, was arrested on May 2 following a call regarding a domestic disturbance at her residence, according to Coconut Creek Talk.
The police report detailed that Bradley was incensed over her daughter sneaking her boyfriend into their home while she was gone. After her daughter denied those accusations, Bradley directed her to sit on a bed with plans to spank her, but during the act, the child squirmed which resulted in Bradley allegedly hitting her multiple times in different places. In a statement obtained by TAPinto Coconut Creek, Bradley claimed to have struck her daughter "7-8 times," though she refutes using a cord.
The incident left the daughter with a variety of injuries; staffers at HCA Florida Northwest Hospital in Margate reported "multiple bruises and contusions to both arms and legs," along with welts on her hand, ear, and neck. The young girl also complained about pain in her head and back, attributed to being hit with an open fist, according to the medical staff's documentation, as detailed by TAPinto Coconut Creek.
Bradley, after the arrest, secured her release with a $1,000 bond. As part of the legal proceedings moving forward, she has been instructed by the court to avoid any contact with her daughter, for whom a guardian ad litem has been appointed. After having admitted to punishing her daughter, Bradley's actions have been categorized under child abuse without great bodily harm, a third-degree felony. During an interview with detectives, she stressed that the intention wasn't harm, but discipline gone awry, as recounted by Coconut Creek Talk.
