A dispute at a public bus stop outside The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale escalated into a knife attack Monday, leaving one man with a slashed arm and sending police searching for the attacker. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported the victim to a local hospital, and his injuries are described as serious but non-life-threatening.
According to NBC 6 South Florida, the two men were arguing at the bus stop when the suspect pulled out a knife and slashed the other man's arm before fleeing the scene, per police. Officers closed off a portion of the bus stop with yellow crime scene tape as the investigation got underway, and the case remains under investigation with no arrest yet announced. The bus stop sits along East Sunrise Boulevard and serves Broward County Transit Route 40, a line that connects the commercial corridor to the Lauderhill Transit Center and downtown Fort Lauderdale's Broward Central Terminal, according to Moovit.
A Mall With a Troubled Recent Stretch
Monday's stabbing marks the second knife attack tied to The Galleria in less than a month. Three weeks earlier, on August 6, a 52-year-old suspect allegedly stabbed a 49-year-old man multiple times during a dispute inside the Blue Martini lounge at the same commercial complex, a case Hoodline covered in its report on the Blue Martini stabbing. That suspect fled in a vehicle before Fort Lauderdale police used a Grappler bumper device to end the chase and take him into custody.
Violence connected to The Galleria stretches back further still. In May 2019, a 43-year-old man was shot and killed and another man was wounded during a late-night dispute at the same Blue Martini venue, and the mall was also cleared by police in July 2019 after an anonymous bomb threat, according to WSVN 7News. In February, an armed road rage confrontation that began on State Road A1A ended near the mall when a driver pulled a handgun and falsely claimed to be a police officer before being arrested.
Part of a Broader Wave of Knife Violence
Monday's incident also fits into a wider pattern of knife violence across Broward County this month. Fort Lauderdale's Rio Vista neighborhood saw a two-person stabbing on August 5, and Hollywood saw a fatal roommate stabbing on August 16, with law enforcement agencies across several municipalities responding to multiple serious knife incidents throughout August.
If the suspect in Monday's attack intentionally cut the victim with a knife, Florida law would classify the offense as aggravated battery under Florida Statute 784.045, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in state prison, 15 years of probation, and a $10,000 fine, according to Hanlon Law. Prosecutors could pursue more serious charges depending on what investigators determine about intent.
Redevelopment Fight Looms Over the Property
The stabbing lands amid an already tense period for The Galleria, an 800,000-square-foot commercial complex at 2414 E. Sunrise Blvd. that is the subject of a major municipal fight over a developer's proposal to build nine 30-story residential towers under Florida's Live Local Act. Fort Lauderdale police have not released a description of the suspect or said whether Galleria security cameras or transit bus footage captured his escape. It also remains unclear whether the two men knew each other before the argument that led to the stabbing. Police routinely rely on tools like automated license plate readers and Grappler bumper devices to track down fleeing suspects along corridors like East Sunrise Boulevard, tactics FLPD deployed 20 times during vehicle pursuits over a four-month stretch in 2025.
