In Dalton, Georgia, a traffic stop by a local police officer has spurred a chain of events that led to the officer's resignation and a spotlight on the plight of an undocumented college student. Former Officer Leslie Allen O'Neal resigned after the Dalton Police Department reviewed dashcam footage that contradicted the reasons for the arrest of Ximena Arias-Cristobal, 19, who was wrongly detained on multiple charges, including driving without a valid license, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
A spokesperson for the City of Dalton confirmed O'Neal's resignation, following the incident on May 5, where Arias-Cristobal was subsequently transferred to an ICE detention center. O'Neal's wife posted a letter on Facebook suggesting that his resignation stemmed from the police department’s perceived lack of support in the face of accusations of wrongful arrest. Despite her charges being dropped, Arias-Cristobal was held at the Stewart Detention Center for approximately two weeks before being granted a $1,500 bond, according to details from WSAZ.
Arias-Cristobal, brought to the United States at age 4, is now pursuing a visa with her attorney, and her next court hearing is not until early 2026, a daunting timeline for someone who has spent the vast majority of her life in this country.
Arias-Cristobal's experience in detention also sheds light on the emotional toll these proceedings take on individuals and their families. "It's not knowing what’s going to happen to me," she told WANF, "Knowing that I could be sent back to a country that I don’t know. Having to be torn apart from my family," as noted by WSAZ.
