The Bay Area's own Sasha Velour, winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race" in 2017 and drag superstar, is set to dazzle audiences at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre with her "The Big Reveal Live Show!" for a limited engagement from June 4 through June 15. Berkeley Repertory Theatre announced the arrival of what promises to be a memorable series of performances filled with emotional lip-syncs, multimedia storytelling, and the heart of Velour's personal history and the rich tapestry of drag itself.
Velour, who grew up as Alexander (Sasha) Hedges Steinberg before transforming into the internationally known artistic force of Sasha Velour, is turning her illustrated memoir into a theater piece. As per Berkeleyside, she divulges that the heart of her live show is about bringing together her family history and personal anecdotes with the fears and political backlash against drag. "I wanted to put that on stage and then transform those stories into drag numbers, which are metaphors," Velour said, emphasizing her signature narrative and visual style.
"The Big Reveal Live Show!" features not just Sasha's famed lip-sync performances but also delves into personal storytelling and video art. The diverse soundtrack for the show taps into a mix that ranges from Stevie Wonder to Stephen Sondheim, showcasing Velour's eclectic tastes and the boundless realms of drag performance. Berkeley Rep anticipates that Velour's show will shake up the Roda Theatre with its high-concept performances and stage design.
The return to Berkeley is significant for Velour, whose roots are deeply interwoven with the Bay Area's history. "Many of my fondest memories are there," Velour told Berkeleyside. Her deep emotional ties to the area make her stint at Berkeley Repertory Theatre a homecoming of sorts, aligning with the personal narrative that flows through "The Big Reveal." Tickets are currently on sale for this homegrown icon's theatrical exploration of drag's depths and delights.
Adding to the excitement, Berkeley Repertory Theatre has released a new trailer on Instagram to give fans a sneak peek into the emotion and artistry awaiting them in "The Big Reveal Live Show!" The trailer arrives just in time for Pride Month, further underscoring the show's importance as a cultural and artistic highlight. With only 12 performances, the theater is calling on fans and newcomers alike not to miss what will be a theatrical triumph.
