The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested Emaleigh Smith, a 23-year-old jailer from Elberton, GA, on charges relating to the smuggling of contraband into Franklin County Jail. The charges include Providing Items Prohibited for Possession by Inmates, Crossing Guard Lines with Intoxicants, and Violation of Oath by Public Office. Smith was reportedly caught with THC edibles and alcohol in her car at the jail premises, as reported by the GBI press release.
Following a tip-off, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reached out to the GBI to look into the matter further. The investigation quickly turned to Smith, who then admitted to having provided multiple banned items to inmates. Among the recipients was Qwelon Johnson, a 33-year-old inmate, who now faces additional charges of possessing these prohibited items and a weapon while incarcerated. According to the official report from the GBI, Smith's delivery of illicit materials was not a singular occurrence but happened on numerous occasions.
After her arrest, Smith was processed at the same facility where she once supervised inmates, but has since been released on bond. The GBI continues to actively investigate the situation and the broad implications it may hold for the security protocols at Franklin County Jail. Once the agency concludes its inquiry, the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office will take over to pursue prosecution.
The GBI encourages anyone with additional information related to drug activity or this case to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously via phone at 1-800-597-TIPS(8477), online through the GBI's tip submission portal, or through the "See Something, Send Something" mobile app.
