A tragic collision on Interstate 88 has resulted in at least one fatality and left another person injured in the western suburbs, officials confirmed. According to ABC7 Chicago, the crash happened during the early hours of Tuesday morning and forced the closure of all westbound lanes between I-355 and Route 53 for several hours.
The incident, which involved two passenger vehicles, occurred close to 4:50 a.m. This threw the early commute into disarray as lanes did not reopen until approximately 8:10 a.m. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, the Illinois State Police has disclosed. A second victim was rushed to the hospital to receive treatment for their injuries, the extent of which has not been provided, as per ABC7 Chicago.
"For the reverse commute in the western suburbs, this will cause major delays," Martin noted, as stated by NBC Chicago. No additional details regarding the cause of the crash or the identities of the individuals involved have been released as the situation is still under review.
