A harrowing pursuit through the Grant Hill neighborhood turned deadly over the weekend when a gray Mercedes-Benz C230 crashed into a retaining wall after its driver attempted to evade police. The San Diego Police Department reported that the incident, which involved a 52-year-old male driver, began when an officer tried to initiate a traffic stop at 100 29th Street late Saturday evening.
The driver, instead of complying, led the officer on a chase that ended tragically at the intersection of 32nd Street and J Street. The San Diego Police Department stated in a press release that the vehicle, while turning, lost control, and the incident resulted in a collision. Following the crash, the driver was taken to the hospital with a fractured femur. In contrast, the front seat passenger, also a 52-year-old male, was declared deceased after being transported to the hospital.
According to the SDPD's public communication, DUI was a contributing factor in this fatal event, highlighting once more the dire consequences of driving under the influence. The police have since handed over the investigation to the Traffic Division, which is currently piecing together the circumstances that led to the collision.
