A fatal crash on Interstate 55 near the Cass Avenue exit left at least one person dead and caused a major shutdown of the southbound lanes on Friday, according to NBC Chicago. The Illinois State Police reported that the incident, involving multiple vehicles including a semi-tractor without its trailer, occurred just before 12:30 p.m. in the southwest suburbs of Chicago.
Running alongside Darien, the crash prompted closures impacting the ramps from both directions of Illinois Route 83 to the southbound I-55, resulting in extended traffic disruptions and investigative procedures. As of yet, authorities have not confirmed the exact number of casualties or the extent of injuries related to the collision, as per NBC Chicago.
Meanwhile, CBS News Chicago noted that the semi-tractor was found overturned in a ditch along the Stevenson Expressway. The identity of the driver, who was killed in the crash, has not been disclosed by the state police. In the wake of the incident, the southbound traffic on I-55 remained blocked for nearly six hours, reopening around 6:30 p.m. No additional information has been released by state police.
