A tragic incident unfolded in Fort Lauderdale when a 19-year-old Fort Pierce woman, Myrah Zeigler, was fatally shot during a dispute at an Airbnb property yesterday morning. According to WSVN, Fort Lauderdale Police were called to the scene around 4:30 a.m. at 828 SW 16th St., where they discovered Zeigler lying in the road with a gunshot wound. She was transported to Broward Health Medical Center but, later succumbed to her injuries.
Witnesses in the neighborhood reported a chaotic scene leading up to the shooting, with some hearing threats of gunfire just before the actual event. “I’m going to shoot you. I’m going to shoot you’ So I’m like alright, the cops are here, everything’s under control and then I would say about 10 minutes later I heard whoosh, whoosh,” one neighbor recounted, a statement obtained by WSVN. The police had been called to the address earlier due to noise and reported disputes, but it wasn't until later that the fatal shot was fired.
Airbnb has since responded to the violence that occurred on its rented property. "Airbnb bans parties, and we condemn this senseless act of gun violence. We suspended the account of the guest who booked this reservation while we look into the situation further, and we stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation," the company stated, as reported by CBS News Miami.
Items such as clothing and a slipper were found scattered at the scene, adding to the evidence collected by investigators, though it remains unclear if the shooting took place inside or outside the residence, according to CBS News Miami. Detectives are working to piece together the series of events that led to Zeigler's death, by interviewing witnesses and others present at the time of the shooting. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has encouraged anyone with information to come forward and contact Detective St. Jean at 954-828-5570.
