The Franklin Police Department is lighting up in blue, a tribute to the nation's law enforcement as National Police Week kicks off. According to the Franklin Police Department, starting May 11 and through the end of the month, the police headquarters will be illuminated in blue each evening. This initiative seeks to pay homage to officers who have given their lives in the line of duty and to show support for those currently serving.
The tradition, joined nationwide, commemorates a time for reflection and unity in the law enforcement community. Chief Deb Faulkner of the Franklin PD spoke to the gravity of the occasion. "This time of year is deeply meaningful to those of us in law enforcement," she said. The act to light up the building aims to symbolically say, "We remember. We are grateful. We stand together," as reported by the Franklin Police Department.
National Police Week was first observed in 1963. It is a period marked by memorials and events recognizing the sacrifices of law enforcement officers. The week focuses on not only honoring the fallen but also appreciating those who continue to safeguard neighborhoods with dedication and honor. Peace Officers Memorial Day, observed on Thursday, May 15, serves as the focal point for remembrance ceremonies.
The community is invited to partake in the homage. The Franklin Police Department has encouraged the public to also display blue lights, ribbons, or flags to show their support for law enforcement throughout the week.
