Cracking down on human trafficking, the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) has instilled a new set of training and protocol requirements for casinos throughout the state, mandating every casino employee to undergo annual training on identifying and reporting the dark trade of human exploitation. Highlighting the urgency of this initiative, IGB Administrator Marcus D. Fruchter noted, "Human traffickers often target casinos and hospitality venues to conduct their illegal activities," as stated by the State of Illinois.
Under the new Casino Rule 3000.175, employees are to receive training that will illuminate the vulnerabilities that lead an individual into the grasp of traffickers, the multiple manifestations of human trafficking, and the subtle, oft-missed indications of such activities in progress, this comprehensive approach seeks not just to educate but empower employees with knowledge to intervene and potentially save lives; their initial training must be completed within just three months from the start of their employment. Alongside training, casinos are also directed to create documented procedures for reporting suspected human trafficking, according to the State of Illinois.
Signage displaying information on human trafficking awareness will become a new fixture in the casinos, intended to increase the visibility of this pressing issue. the notices will be strategically placed in restrooms, main entrances, and other high-traffic areas to provide help or reporting instructions to potential victims or informants. Reflecting on the importance of such awareness, ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly stressed that "Human trafficking is one of the most underreported and under-identified crimes," as per the State of Illinois.
