A puzzling towing episode on Houston's North Loop, originally captured by onlookers, took an even more bizarre turn as details emerged following the incident's tumultuous conclusion. According to KHOU 11 News, after a blue sedan suffered a breakdown, the driver reached out to his girlfriend for a makeshift tow utilizing an SUV and a chain, which resulted in a spectacle of the car swinging uncontrollably across the freeway.
The relentless physics of a broken axle left the sedan zig-zagging dramatically as captured on video; David Chairez, crossing from Highway 290 into the chaos on the North Loop, initially could not grasp the full extent of what was unfolding before him and his coworker, the chain-tethered sedan barely keeping its unpredictable dance away from further disaster, as reported by ABC13.
Witness Ken Collins, who watched the ordeal unfold from a nearby office, shared his concerns with KHOU 11 News, notably questioning the decision to tow from the rear on a highway. "It was like err err, like losing control, I heard when his tire blew out, just lots of swerving," Collins recounted, depicting a scene of apparent vehicular distress and the subsequent conflict between the drivers as the SUV and the sedan came to a stop on the service road.
Despite the pandemonium and potential risk involved with such an unconventional tow, the aftermath didn't result in citations for the towing method, although it did lead to the arrest of the sedan's driver, 32-year-old Dontae Brown, on an unrelated out-of-state warrant as per Houston Police Department's statements, as the SUV driver, identified as Brown's girlfriend, explained their financial inability to secure proper towing services and the subsequent mechanical failure that escalated the situation, both KHOU 11 News and ABC13 reported.
